Do you need to hear from the President-elect on the economy?

Every so often, one hears the argument that "Left and Right" are outdated terms, or that there really aren't enormous differences in the ways the Left and Right view America, the world, men and women, and just about every other important aspect of life. I wish this were true. But the gaps between the Left and Right on almost every issue that matters -- including and especially issues of good and evil -- are in fact unbridgeable.

That is why, for many years, I have invited leading representatives of the intellectual Left onto my radio show. Not in order to debate them (though I would be happy to do so at any college), but in order to clarify for listeners exactly what the Left believes.

I recently dialogued with an icon of the Left, Howard Zinn, professor emeritus of political science at Boston University, author of "A People's History of the United States," lauded by The New York Times as "required reading" for all American students. And, as Wikipedia notes, it "has been adopted as required reading in high schools and colleges throughout the United States."

Dennis Prager: I think a good part of your view is summarized when you say, "If people knew history, they would scoff at that, they would laugh at that" -- the idea that the United States is a force for the betterment of humanity. I believe that we are the country that has done more good for humanity than any other in history. What would you say . . . we have done more bad than good, we're in the middle, or what?

Howard Zinn: Probably more bad than good. We've done some good, of course; there's no doubt about that. But we have done too many bad things in the world. You know, if you look at the way we have used our armed forces throughout our history: first destroying the Indian communities of this continent and annihilating Indian tribes, then going into the Caribbean in the Spanish-American War, going to the Philippines, taking over other countries, not establishing democracy but in many cases establishing dictatorship, holding up dictatorships in Latin America and giving them arms, and you know, Vietnam, killing several million people for no good reason at all, certainly not for democracy or liberty, and continuing down to the present day with the war in Iraq . . . .

DP: There is evil in the way we treated the Indians, there is no question about it. But there's also no question that the great majority died of disease and not deliberately inflicted disease.

HZ: That's true that the great majority of Indians died of disease in the 17th century when the Europeans first came here. But after that -- after the American Revolution -- when the colonists expanded from the thin band of colonies along the Atlantic and expanded westward, at that point we began to annihilate the Indian tribes. We committed massacres all over the country . . . .

DP: What percentage of the Indians do you believe we massacred, as opposed to diseases ravaged?

HZ: Oh, well it might have been 10 percent.

DP: But 10 percent is very different from the generalization of "we annihilated the Indians."

HZ: Oh, well 10 percent is a huge number of Indians, that is. So it's pointless I think to argue about whether disease . . . or deliberate attacks killed more Indians . . . .

DP: No, but 10 percent is very different from what the general statement of "annihilate" tends to indicate. That's all I am saying.

HZ: Okay. Continued...

Subject: Indians and Moslems
Bottom line: Indians -- i will not use the term "native americans" because they were as much immigrants as anyone else -- lost out to a technologically superior civilization...and that, my friends -- is life.

As for the Moslems, they are fanatics...ALL of them. They shoud be forcibly removed from the USA and we should remain ever vigilant against attacks from these prehistoric savages, the followers of a mass murdering, slave owning pedophile.

Catching Up
Been away for awhile ... visiting NW Arkansas (and, ironically, the Trail of Tears) ... only to find a lot of blathering about some of the things I said before I left. Since the last post to this thread was four days ago, maybe it has already died a natural death ... in that case, I shall keep these comments brief (what's the point if no one reads them).

To movwater: I found your response to the bulleted (and summary) Cuban chronology I posted quite amusing. Go back and look at it and see how many internal contradictions you can find ... sort of like one of those old "how many errors can you find in this picture?" ... but I'll give you a hint: see how many times an American governor of Cuba disbanded a democratically elected Cuban government and/or called up the Marines to "restore order" (not that a group of armed Marines in the capital wouldn't have some influence on decisions the government made!) ... I would add that you seem to have a rather dismissive attitude towards people of color (blacks in Cuba, Native Americans in this country) ... you also place great faith in the integrity of "treaties", and the ability of the American govenment to break them whenever convenient to do so (so I suspect you have similar attitudes about the Geneva Conventions, which is a living, active example of how people -- not just Americans, I might add -- can justify or rationalize going back on their word when it is convenient for them to do so) ...

to several folks: I pointed out the fact that almost all Moslems are deeply offended by our liberal interpretation of sexual freedom ... which includes the fact that intelligent people go out of their way to DEFEND what the mainstream might consider prurient or filthy ... with the express purpose of trying to get a few of you holier-than-thou rabble rousers to take off your mirrored sunglasses for a moment and recognize that you have some things in common not only with followers of Islam, but also with radical, so-called Islamofascists. Most of you seem to have missed the irony ... instead attacking the ACLU and other defenders of freedom of expression ... and sounding just like Osama bin-Laden in the process!

to acheick: it seems that we share a respect for the values that other cultures have developed, even if we choose not to accept them as our own ... we also seem to recognize that people living in all societies, regardless of belief systems and practices, are still people -- some make good choices and others do not, some are wise and others are not, some make contributions that benefit others and some live only for themselves. This is true of the Nez Perce, the Cherokee, the Seminole, the Cubans, the Phillipinos, Arabs, and even us.

to all lefties on this thread: attempting to create balance in discussion is not what a right-wing blog is all about ... to be fair, the same can be said of air america message boards ... but that shouldn't stop any of you from trying. Righties, more power to those of you with a sense of integrity and a willingness to explore different interpretations of the past.
